Eye Exam – What You Need to Know

As we get caught up with our day to day activities, we often neglect to take care of our eyes. We do not bother to go to an eye specialist for checkups until such time we realize that we are having problems with our vision. Usually, we start to notice blurriness when we read or see something on screen or on paper, but we often just brush it off. Next thing we know, we already have serious eye problems.

A world of eye problems can be prevented if we are cautious and diligent in making sure our eyes get the proper attention and care it needs. It is recommended that your eyes be checked every two years to avoid the onset of eye diseases and conditions. We will tackle on some basic procedures and treatments needed for eye care.

Vision Test

Are you familiar with the eye chart? Most likely, you have seen and used one, at least once in your life, but never really took it seriously. In this simple vision test, the optometrist will put something to block the vision of one eye so that the other eye can be tested, and vice versa. In this instance, the patient will be asked to read groups of letters from the chart. The top lines are filled with large letters, and becomes smaller and smaller as it reaches the bottom line.

Results

If you have a 20-20 vision, it means your eyesight is normal. This would be determined if you can read all the letters in the eye chart from top to bottom. However, if you are unable to read a few letters correctly and have a 20-30 vision, you are still allowed to drive, in most states. Anything beyond that would require you to wear eyeglasses.
If you have a 20-40 vision, you might have a mild case of nearsightedness, otherwise referred to as myopia.

Solution

If it is found out that a patient has eye problems such as in the case of being nearsighted or farsighted, he will be prescribed with corrective eyeglasses or lenses. To determine the right lens to be prescribed, there will be a series of tests to be conducted and several lenses will be tested on the patient’s eyes to find out which one is best for him.
Once the lenses are determined, the optometrist will then proceed to make the glasses. As to when the glasses can be finished would depend on several factors such as location and facilities available.

For example, if the eye test was taken at the doctor’s office which has no facilities to make the glasses, it may take a longer time for the product to be completed. However, it would be a lot quicker if taken in a clinic that also makes and sells eyeglasses.
